Need to remove the generator on our 1940 160. I have removed one on our 47 356 as well as our 48 327.Never had a problem. I just cannot get to the front bolt on this one. Considering removing the splash pan on that side so I can see the bolt from underneath. Is that the solution? Also, looks like I should replace the belt. Anyone have a source for that wide belt?

Can't help with what might need to come off to access a bolt and remove the generator but do remember some mentions that if the front motor mount has sagged the prewar conventional body crossmember is worse than the Clippers in interfering with removing the belt from the vibration damper.

John Ulrich is one source for the belt.julrichpackard.com/water_related_parts_belts.htm

On my 41 the motor had sagged in the front due to the mount rubbers being worn. I jacked up the engine a 1/2 inch without lifting the car and I was able to change the belt. This might also give you enough clearance to acces the bolt. I took the old belt to napa and they matched it up.

I wasn't aware that NAPA had that belt. Part number, please.

John lost his supplier and no longer has the 356 belts. Several have indicated NAPA can match it.

Did you check the Parts Cross-Reference from the left menu of this site? It shows Napa number 22A1365 which I presume is for cars without A/C.

The 356 in my 160 is from a 1947 Custom, so I'm not sure if these photos do any good, or if the screw hole in photo generatorbolt2 is for the splash pan.

The front bolt, generatorbolt3, was no picnic to install, but I think I did it from underneath more by feel than sight, but it was a while ago.

Good luck with your project.

It does help. I may be feeling in the center and your picture looks like it is closer to the fender side. I have about rdecided I need to jack it up and remove the splash pan. I think I could feel it better.

The part # for the belt I put on my 41 is Gates 6439BR. It was short and hard to put on but not too tight once I got it on.
Sorry for the delay in answering but I was gone for 5 days
