Today I bypassed the electric rotary pump with some neoprene hose & clamps. I drove the car 10 miles and it ran great, never starving for gas. So the problem is the mechanical pump can't pull enough gas through the electric rotary pump. I'll have to either find a different electric pump that will let enough gas flow through it, or install one of those bypass/check valve systems.

Good to know the problem is found and what it needs to fix it. Since you have a nice new pump I'd vote for a few dollars more worth of fittings and a quick opening or low opening pressure valve. Summit racing has one and McMaster also carries one rated for gasoline that opens at .3 psi. With the right fittings you can keep the arrangement fairly compact and valve mostly out of sight.

Interesting. I started having the exact same problem with my 1940 on the way to Hershey... after I had run the car completely out of gas. Afterward, it needed the electric fuel pump almost all the time, especially on the way back home. I'm thinking that the filter in the electric fuel pump has gotten clogged, so I may try to replace the electric pump first.

The pump I prefer, and from what I've read, most people prefer is the Airtex E-8011. No regulator needed.
