Gerd,

Thanks for your research on the Adelaide SA Packard dealerships. I have forwarded a link to this thread to a number of Packard owners in South Australia for their erudition.

Below the talk is of "sole distributors of Packard" related to Sporting Cars Limited. It looks as if the Prestige Motors Ltd. (the former Packard Agency) run out of steam, neither hide nor hair of them in later news papers.

Packard introduced hypoid differential gears in the mid of the 1920s, a feature which allowed a lower floor and less noise (therefore the sound when driving in reverse). Don't know why the below shown newspaper reportage hightlighted this a decade later.
Interesting that the newspapers on the opposite side of the world -> did the same. Both, The News in Adelaide and the German AUTOMOBILZEITUNG have been published in May 1937.
Was global marketing another of Packard inovations? If yes, then orchestrated through the central Export Corporation New York.

This advertisement brings us back to the home base. Sporting Cars Ltd. moved into Flinders street, close to the office of their former competitor. The same kind of flexibility one believes to perceive when looking at their two-pronged sales tactic. If the below shown illustration is to be believed then the Packard Six had been available at Sporting Cars Ltd. dressed in both, standard body (as depicted) as well as in Richards body.
Or do we see a "standard illustration" that reinforces the hypothesis of a central marketing?

Hello Guscha, You are a wonderful facts digger... unbelievable. I do know of 1937 Australian bodied Packards, but not through Sporting Cars in South Australia and Richards. I have 5 Richards bodied Packards from the perhaps 200 or so produced. Never heard of a 1937 Richards Packard. Lots of 1938/39 Richards Packards. A few 1940 Richards Packards as WW11 erupted. Some very exotic Australian bodied Packards exist and some went to the US as RHD . Fine body builders such as Martin and King prioduced RHD Limousines on Packard Super Eight chassis. No Twelves in RHD unfortunately and Sir MacPherson Robertson was the only person to import new Packard Twelve vehicles into Australia. We had a Chocolate Manufacturer who was addicted to Packards as well as Chocolates ( Sir MacPherson Robertson). He had many pre Twenties Packard Twin Six. None survive that I know of. I have his 1938 Super Eight Formal with 94,000 miles.
Keep up the good work. Peter Toet.

Peter,

There's a guy in Victoria, a frequent contributor on the AACA website, who has the "remains" of a Sir MacPherson Robertson '22 Twin Six for which he's gathering parts for the restoration. I put this guy in contact with BobD in SA regarding the swag of early Packard parts he picked up a few years back. If memory serves me, and sometimes it doesn't, I made mention of this in an article in the club magazine last year.

Peter, thanks for the good words and the valuable input, especially the 1937 clarification. TJR and their interconnection with Detroit would be worth another time travel (<- high-speed internet required).

Sporting Cars Ltd., now located at Peel street, held faith with Packard even after long years of war.

But what is that? Don't miss to read the advertisement. Mal, did you qualify for a permit to purchase a Packard?

Or did you trick the authorities into giving their approval? Spit it out! I hope you know that BigKev has the right to confiscate contraband Packards.

Gerd,

Not a definitive answer as it comes off the top of my head!

For some years after WW2 new car availability was strictly limited, so you "stood" in line when you ordered one. Would think the permit let you "jump the queue". But to qualify for a permit you'd need to have a good reason to do so, eg doctors so they could visit sick patients (Doctors did house calls back then!).
