I can't speak for insurors, but I'd think a high declared or agreed value car with full coverage and no garage might be a problem, especially in thunderstorm-prone areas. A shipping container might be a low cost alternative in some areas. I'd want it ventilated.

So many variables.... condition, value, coverage limits, rarity, jurisdictional requirements, and many more. In this area, if you own the car, insurance requirements are fairly minimal, and collision/comprehensive or "full coverage" is not required.

Why did you tell him? As a licensed California VIN Verifier, I always tell customers, especially the friendly and chatty ones (I’m that way myself), to keep quiet at the DMV and tell them only what they ask and no more. The same with insurance. If they ask where it’s garaged, just presume they mean the address where it’s kept and don’t volunteer that it’s not in a garage.

I did not initially volunteer it.

It started with Progressive, and another vintage car I own, not the Packard. Based on the age of that car, they immediately suggested Hagerty would be a better fit. I don't have a dedicated agent and went directly to Hagerty.com.

Once I entered my address, their online form asks: will the car be kept in a covered garage? And among the possible other choices than a covered garage was "driveway". I selected that option because insurance fraud is a real thing, with my minimum liability in such a situation being a complete dismissal of any claim I might have, thousands in wasted premium $, with no further recourse.

After that, the site informed me Hagerty would not be able to insure my car. I didn't understand why they were declining to insure me, and I figured it might be a mistake. So I contacted them by phone directly and spoke with their customer service reps, who identified the driveway as the issue. So, pretending I was able to choose to keep my car in my garage (the car does not fit), I told them no problem, I could keep it in the garage. Then, they informed me they'd "need pictures of the car in the garage" to verify vehicle storage requirements. That ended the conversation.

Coincidentally, at the same time, I had also contacted an insurance agent referred by a friend. They actually came back to me with a premium quote on a Hagerty policy. They had not asked me where I'd be storing the car other than my address. I think it would have been better if I'd gone through an agent with a vested interest in writing me a policy, vs. corporate customer service who are looking to dot every 'i', and cross every 't' before writing a policy.

Lesson 'somewhat' learned.

I don’t recall them needing pictures of my car, but I selected garage right from the start.

I think the answer to this is in honesty. They clearly aren't asking for the address as they ask for that separately. They specifically ask if the car will be stored in a garage or not.

For others, comments, Hagerty did ask me if my car would be garaged, but the they did not require any photos of the car or the garage.

My current policy declarations page reads the following:

"Vehicle Type: Auto
Garaging: Private Garage, Barn, Pole Building"

They don't seem to be very particular.

My car is kept in a very well built, well-insulated, insulated, mouse-tight building with a cement floor.

Some people garage their antique vehicles, boats, etc at a location other than their residence.

Hello all, a very interesting thread. No one has discussed cost of insurance or the benefits of insurance, such as recovery to your home if you break down. I recently purchased a nice original 1947 Custom Super Clipper in good original shape. I tried to insure it for the $A70k that I paid for it but the insurance company bucked in the reins as they do not have any car like that on their data base. I settled for $A50k comprehensive cover which includes tilt tray recovery to your home if you break down over 100k (60 miles) from your garage. For longer distances( say 3,000 miles) they tilt tray plus give you accommodation and a hire car and have a $A7,00 limit to get you back home. They are particular about your garaging but are not unreasonable. The cost for $50k, 12 month comprehensive (includes windscreen replacement etc was $A228 ( $US150?). You also get to keep the wreck if there is an accident. How much is your typical Collector car insurance in the USA?

Pricing varies according to the many variables that apply, as well as to the range of risks the specific policy exposes the insurer to. My situation is far different from someone who resides in Manhattan and parks a fully insured car on the street.
