That was the way mine were too Kev. I believe the dust shield acts in place of any need for further washers.

Thanks Bob. What about on the backside under the nuts?

Sorry, I should have specified, NO WASHERS front or back in the assembly, as yours, only drilled bolts and castle nuts.
And there was enough grease/dirt/rust to show they had never been removed before. I had to drill out the holes in the bolts as the cotter pins would not move so I just turned the nuts over them during original disassembly.

Something that was interesting was that grease shields on my front brakes were installed through the rear of backing plates instead of the front when I took it apart. So they were sandwiched between the backing plate and the spindle.

Yours appear to be installed on the front of the backing plate. I remember my 54 was on the front as well.

It's hard to tell from the part plate illustration which would be correct.

Installed through the back it negates any need for a gasket to keep grease out.

I spoke to Ross and he confirmed in those years/models the grease shield was designed to push in from the rear of backing plate. So sandwiched between the backing plate and the spindle.

Interesting about the lack of washers. My 1951 not only has them but it also uses special hardened bolts that fit snugly, almost like shoulder bolts for keeping it all properly aligned. The bolts go in from the back with the nuts inside.

This uses the same kind of bolts. As does my 54. Both have the castle nuts on the outside with cotter pins.

My 1951 uses Marsden nuts, invented as I understand it by a Packard employee and used for many applications around the car. No cotter pin needed.

I was able to get the trashcans back in before the HOA started giving me the stink eye!
