Yes, there is for sure a spring washer (wavy). No shims.

37 did not use a tapered roller bearing, which started in 38. It uses a sealed (ball?) bearing style.

I found no mention of a gasket behind the backing plate in any of the parts manuals so other than those which used metal shims I would say nothing is there. On all backing plate to axle joints a hard metal to metal connection would seem to be wanted.

Olson’s Gaskets in Oregon has some types of these even if they are not listed on their site. Even custom gaskets (typo corrected!) from them take only a week or so to get as they are very fast.

Kev, the "Angleset" rear axle used on the 37 juniors is much different than the ones used on the 38s and later. Is yours one of the later types?

As others have mentioned, torque specs apparently were not a big deal then and I did not find a chart or even much mention of them in Motors 11th where they cover rear axles in some detail.

The only prewar info I found was suggestions mentioned in the SMs where they said "tighten the axle nut securely". First postwar chart I found with a spec for that nut was the range you mentioned earlier of 200-270. The center section may be different on your axle but since the shafts and drum construction is so similar I would go with that spec.

I believe it's a '37 unit since it is NOT using the tapered axle bearings that started in '38.

Howard, thanks for that!

Hopefully, once all the parts come in tomorrow, I can get it all back together and move the car, so I can reach the rear passenger side drum that is currently not accessible.

Also, I got a shipping notification from DHL, and my carb parts should be here today from the UK. But those will sit on the back burner until I have all the brake system squared away. I still need to buy and bend up new hardlines. The old ones are just shot and dripping rusty coagulated fluid.
