Glad you checked the water distribution tube, what you found it not so uncommon.

The water pump casting should also have shallow recesses around the bolt holes that require the copper washers, makes it easy to remember which ones go thru into the water jacket. I always shellace the threads on those particular bolts as well. As to accessing the lower pump bolts, my normal method is to remove the two large bolts that hold the front motor mount yoke to the frame and put a block of wood under the oil pan and jack up about 1/2 inch, and then remove the two small bolts that hold the front motor mount cushions to the block.

A good trick to flush the back of the block is to adapt a long 1/4" copper tubing to a garden hose end. The tubing is small enough to get into tight places, and the small diameter provides a nice pressurized stream to better loosen the stuff out of the back of the block. You're welcome.

Good suggestion JW, probably even more effective if you remove the rearmost welch plug.

Up and running, congratulations!

Now for the "maiden voyage" to the car show and take plenty of pic's of her and any other Packards there.

Way to go Eric. If anybody can figure out a problem on the fly, you are that guy. It sounds like you're getting closer to a reliable piece.

With the luck you're having, I'd check/clean the oil pan as well. The upside of all this is now you'll have a nearly new cooling system. A huge help when you have temps like you've described!
