If you are going to arc weld it please don't use steel electrodes as it gets drawn into the cast iron and adds more carbon and will go rock hard, then you won,t be able to drill it. You must use a cupro nickel based electrode. All the pre-heat advice is spot on.
Hope this helps

Terry

Use a pure nickle rod.

I would drill it oversized from the back side and then turn a thin wall tube to fit and with the correct sized hole through the center. Put that in the hole and fill in your void with weld. this does two things, it gives you something to weld to instead of just glopping it on and it also gives you a finished hole so you aren't trying to drill through hard spots from welding.

can you buy the half circle seals for the oil pan (don't know the term for them) without buying the whole set of gaskets?

They don't have a separate part number so unless someone has an open or partial gasket set they won't be using you will probably have to buy the 4 piece oil pan gasket.

If it comes to that, Max has them for $20. Probably available from our other vendors as well.

7.25" long. 13/32 to 7/16 wide. 7/32 thick. Cork.

Note that those measurements are from an NOS kit. So some shrinkage has occured. No more than 1/32" shrinkage i suspect. Just get some 1/4" thick cork gasket material and cut it.

I usually don't like gasket cements. But on mine i permatexed the gaskets to the ENGINE and RTV on the pan. That will facilitateez removal without gasket damage. Mine has been R&R at least 15 times over the last 20K miles and 8 years or more. Just did it the other day and a timing chain too. NO PROBLEMS. IT doesnt leak a drop.
