Is there a replacement made for a 1931 super 8 oil filter? I know about the spin-on conversions, but since this canister lays sideways, I doubt one would work.

The mounting position (horizontal) doesn't make any difference to the performance of the filter, the Burr Ripley and other conversions (R&A) for the EF-2 work just fine. They are very widely used on the models prior to the introduction of the full-flow filter (1934).
