Is there a difference in the headgaskets between the different 55-56 V8 motor variants?

Looking in the parts book I would have to answer yes.
5.0504 GASKET-HEAD
440469 ALL 55TH; 5640-60-70 (2)
440976 5680-88 (2)

5.05047 SHIM-CYL. HEAD GASKET
440884 5560-80 FOR LOW COMPRESSION RATIO (2)
6480755 ALL 56TH FOR LOW COMPRESSION RATIO (4)

The gaskets were different in bore size for the smaller vs larger CID -- approx 4.120 vs 4.255 but doesn't appear to be different in water passages.

The shim gasket was normally part of export equipment, lowering compression ratio for destinations where suitably high octane gasoline was not readily available. There was also an extra thick gasket available for the in-line 8s for the same purpose.

I think this posting raises some interesting questions: Steel shim with embossed sealing and composite construction gaskets; and open and blocked water passages. Did not know the V-8s used a composite type head gaskets. I wonder how this all relates to Hank's problems?

Neither did I.

later kits started coming with composite...and the metal seems to be harder to find now.

I haven't seen any composite V8 gaskets. All those I have are just embossed steel.

The shim part is interesting. I always thought anything besides a gasket was a bad idea -- let alone two as it appears they did for 56 -- or is that only with the composite gaskets.

I remember a discussion from a couple of years ago and using two headgaskets to lower the compression was definitely not a popular idea. Am surprised a shim is any different.

I have the head shim kit, bought from Packard Farm back in the 80s. never even opened the box.

question,,

what seals better. steel or other,, I know Toyota uses fiber head gaskets;

I would think after awhile coolant would attack the fiber .

but the p 12 uses fiber headgaskets

then you would think easier to warp a head?.

I've often wondered, did the steel (compression lowering) steel shim require a conventional embossed steel headgasket on each side of it? Thus 2 shims plates and 4 headgaskets per engine?
