I agree and complement you on doing the painting every painter even the best had to do his first job. When you are finished you will have the satisfaction of knowing you did it that is a lot of the enjoyment of having a old car as a hobby. The results are yours and the self satisfaction will make up for any imperfections in your work. The next job will be better and your experience will allow you to be the person with answers when others ask questions.

I use a self etching primer to make sure it bites into the new metal.

If you look for a "DTM" (direct to metal) rated primer then you will not have to apply an etch before the primer goes on. Also if you sand through the primer while doing the bodywork, you can just touch it up with more DTM.

Not sure what brands are available in South Africa, but I have used Valspar DTM, and Transtar DTM with good results. DTM is a bit more expensive than other primers, but it ends up being cheaper in the long run as you dont need to buy an etch. Also those mosts DTMs can be over reduced to make their own sealer. So you save money there also, as you wont need to buy a seperate sealer product.

Thanks for the advise regarding the light black coat JeffM. My oldtimer spraypaint guy gave me axactly the same advise. I will do this definitely as it makes sense. I do believe however that this might take some time LOL!

The primer I used is the 2KMS primer recommended by the paint company. I am not sure about the application onto bare metal, but they recommended it at the paint shop so I have to trust them.

There is still a long way ahead before the final top coat andI can only work on it on weekends. I am just glad that it is covered in primer as we are having out wet rainy season with thundershowers every afternoon. That spurred me on to at least get the primer on.

Thanks for all the interest will keep you posted.

I delivered the 4 doors and ten hinges to the sandblasters on Saturday. We are getting a lot of rain these days so I was apprehensive about the whole issue, scared of the panels flash rusting.
Luckily everything went well and I picked up the parts yesterday. It came out well and I don't have too much patching work to be done.

Tragedy struck when the starter decided to self destruct last week. Still trying to fix it......

Barrie,

Good to see the doors and hardware turned out well.
The starter, that's another matter altogether! Can you get a replacement locally? That break on the starter body looks very nasty as does the bendix drive. OUCH!

Received my new/refurbished bendix from US today - price $33.50, shipping was $43.00! I was very lucky to still find it at a reasonable price. I can recommend these guys from West Virginia - Thompson Electric Service - fast and friendly. The bendix housing was also welded up. Hope it will be strong enough now.

Don't muck around do you Barrie? When you break something it sure is broken! But good to see you've got the replacement parts and the housing fixed.

Great job on the starter. Just out of curiosity, did you find a reason for all the damage? Would sure hate to see it happen again.

Ja, I dont play games! the problem is that the 288 has difficulty staring from cold. After it has caught once, it starts very easily and fast. I am thinking carb problems. I have a non standard stromberg that seems to be from a late 60 model Ford? anyway, that is something I will fix before hammering the 6v starter on the 12v battery again! Learnt a scary and expensive lesson!
