One way to get correct installation height is to make a gauge block that sits on top of the tappet.

Set all the tappets at maximum clearance. Knock the guide down until you can't slide a feeler gauge between the block and the guide.

That way you get a professional looking job. That's the kind of stuff I used to get yelled for doing because it takes more time to do. But guide height affects the breathing so it has to be right.

Tim, I'm going to replace both intake and exhaust guide on my 356 ci engine. Would you recommend the guide/stop be made of metal or hardwood? My thought was to get each tappet on the low portion of cam and measure distance between top of tappet and bottom of existing guide to make "stop block" guide.
Is this a good approach? Thanks.

Thanks Tim, What is the procedure for removing and replacing. I take it they can be pounded out or in with a hammer or maybe pressed somehow. I am glad you mentioned the stop guide. What is a good way to do this. thanks
