I have a 37 Packard limo and in the center of the roof is a vinyl area that is cut out, the top was like this when new. I have 4 questions:
1)Why is the roof not all metal?

2) What kind of maintenance is required for this area?
My grand father used a black top dressing

3) The top has been replaced should top dressing be used?

4) If so what and where can I get it?

Rick, Welcome to Packardinfo, you have a great car.
The reason the top is not all metal is that Packard did not have the ability to stamp that large a roof pan in 1937, GM has the distinction of having the first all steel top with the 1935 Chevrolet, other GM brands followed suit shortly after and so did the rest of the industry. The manner in which your car's body was made was standard for the industry until the development of the large presses needed and the industry-wide chage from wood framed bodies to all steel bodies.
I have seen dressing used, I have seen nothing used, if the rubber insert was new enough (re-covered within the last 10 years or so. The dressing helps the appearance and can aid in the waterproofing. Some modern herse body manufacturers still use this rubber material, so for the time being it is still readily available.

Tanks for your kind words about my car. driving it in the natural was the best in so many ways. You can go on line and see a picture of the car in the movie ignore the driver "ME" THE CAR IS BETTER LOOKING. lol Search for- Packard Super Eight in the movie The Natural....hit search and scroll down until you find the heading. It's a lot easier than trying to see it in the movie.. I know

Rick
