My entire Packard knowledge base began in October this year and is web based so I wouldn't want to match wits with anyone on this subject in this forum. That said, the body shape and the rear hub diameter along with some other details I've noticed, like the rear frame rail ends and the shape of the frame panel above the fuel tank, really seem to be 7 series characteristics. Another web tid bit I read is that the wheelbase went to 127.5" when they added a belt to the fan. Seems like a drastic way to accommodate another belt. Is that something you can confirm and if so, when did that occur? I'll try to get pictures on soon.

The panel over the fuel tank is another 7th Series feature not on the 6th series, so apart from the 6th Series engine, the smaller rear hubs and 127.5" wheelbase all indicate 7th Series.

I don't know how much of the bodywork is still intact on what you have but IIRC you should also be able to differentiate a 626 from a 726 by the so-called "parking lights"; they were cowl-mounted on the 6th series, but front fender mounted on the 7th series. I think I'm correct in this but if not, someone will surely correct me.

There are many significant differences between 6th & 7th Series, in addition to the cowl parking lights on the 6th and fender mounted parking lights on the 7th Series standard eights, both of which I think were options.

There are many other difference, eg. flat bumper bars on 6th, curved face bars on 7th. Other 7th Series features are lower body line and more mouldings, different fender shape, glove boxes, ivory knobs, different tail light, adjustable steering column, 4 speed transmission, adjustable drivers seat, curved end on the running boards were they meet the rear fenders, etc.

No fenders, no running boards, no bumpers, no lights. The dash panel isn't installed but one came with the car sans instruments and there are no glove boxes in it. May not be original to the car. There aren't any holes in the cowl for mounting lights. The remains of the chassis lube system are still there. Isn't that a '31 first year feature? I also got a cast iron transmission along with the spare motor. I'm sure they aren't a matched set nor does it seem to belong to the chassis. The block on the car maybe. But is there something that would distinguish it from any other tranny?

DavidM is a lot more familiar with these cars than I am so hopefully he'll help you figure it out. But no, 1931 was not the first year for the chassis lube system.

The Bijur lube system was certainly on the 6th Series cars and quoting from the "Turnquist" book the Bijur system was introduced in 1925 on the 2nd Series 8's and the 3rd Series 6's.
I don't see how the identification can go much further without some photos of the remains of this car

Ken emailed some pic's and asked this "Can you ID the tranny? Not sure if it's even Packard at this point". I can say with some certainty it is Packard but I'll leave it to the more knowledgeable to closely identify it.
