After one of those runs where the car will not top forty, pullout a plug or two and see what color they are--white/lean or black/rich.
Likely your carb's metering rods are not moving or are set very wrong. Or main jets are restricted. Have also seen carbs with the float level set so low the carb had almost nothing to work with. Oh, and while you have your timing light out, accel. the engine and watch the marks. As you accel to 2k rpm or so the marks should walk up past the pointer quite a ways. When you snap the throttle back to idle, the marks should jump perhaps 2/3 of the way back at once (vac advance working properly), and then the marks should come back to initial setting as the engine slows to idle.

Could it be a soft rubber hose on the inlet side of the fuel pump that collapses when it gets warm???
You also mentioned an aux pump. I'm assuming you are referring to an electric pump. Could that be the problem? Maybe try bypassing it with a short section of rubber hose (remember to use gas resistant hose). Please describe the symptoms the car exhibits when it won't go faster than 40 mph (e.g. misses, bogs down, etc.).

Could be a coil or condenser poohing out when it gets hot. The black plug bothers me, that indicates a rich mixture if it is sooty or excess oil burning if it is greasy.
