1955 Packard Caribbean Convertible

I recently acquired this vehicle from an estate sale. It was purchased by Robert Taylor in 1963 at Hollenback Motors Inc. in Spokane Washington and family owned for 55 years. 54040 actual miles and has been in climate controlled storage for over a half a century. It is all original including paint, panels, interior, top, drive train etc...Only 500 were produced from the factory at a price of 5900. We have some historical documentation including the dealer invoice, 1963 License plates and a tire purchase receipt from 1963.
Those tires are still on the vehicle. This is a well preserved survivor automobile.

Really nice original survivor!

One quibble: there is no such thing as a "3 Speed Twin Ultramatic Transmission". All T-Us were 1 or 2 speed depending upon which D-range was selected. The torque converter was a lock-up type which *felt* like a 3rd speed, but wasn't.

This is a very nice-looking 1955 Caribbean. Two questions immediately arise:

1.) If the top is original, it would be very nice to see detailed photos of the outside and especially the inside(which should be in red color). So many of these cars for sale today claim to have original tops, but almost never are the tops on such cars originals. Of course, the top on this car may be the original, but it would be nice to confirm this with photos. Original exteriors of the 1955 convertible tops were pure white, but the fabric could easily darken over the years both from soiling and age. Again, it would be nice to see photos of a rare original.

2.) For some reason, this Caribbean is hiked up in the rear and dropped down in the front. This just isn't the way it ought to be sitting (body should be level). So... one immediately has to ask...is the Torsion-Level Suspension working or broken? If broken, what is wrong?

Of course an upper radiator hose made of flex-hose isn't original, so despite the low miles, this component has been changed.

Anyway, thanks for showing and sharing this beautiful Caribbean.

The glovebox door has 2 holes as if a name plate was on it? Was it with the car?

The passenger visor looks like it had a vanity mirror on it at one time, was it with the car?

I hoping an expert can chime in about the holes in the glovebox. We are interested in knowing what was originally there. I believe on the visor was something to hold your registration called snap on visor, I have that piece and attached a photo of it. I also purchased some odd and ends including a clock, tail light lenses, and lots of brochures and manuals. I'll share these with you folks in the future.

The two holes on the glove box door would have been where the original owner's special brass or brushed stainless plate was affixed. Two studs on the back of the plate held it in specially-drilled holes and were retained on the back site by Tinnerman nuts. Not all Caribbeans had this plate unless it was ordered by the original owner using a form supplied with the car.

The plate stated as follows:

This Custom Built Caribbean
Made Specially For
(Name of owner)
Studebaker-Packard Corporation


Usually when the original owner sold the car or traded it, they removed the plate and kept it.
