It worked!

Possibly the relatively recent change in default format is the reason some are having problems posting from iPhones and iPads. Apple's default format is now HEIF and I don't know if the website can accept that format. In the SETTINGS menu, changing the default camera format setting from High Efficiency to Most Compatible lets the image be captured and posted as a jpeg again. Downside to the change back to most compatible is it does result in larger file size photos both in the posted photo and also storage space needed on the device or iCloud drive.
