1938 bumper guards?

I purchased this 1938 1601-D last fall and have just come up with the time to give it a close inspection and noticed that I can't find any 38's with these bumper guards. They fit perfectly to the bumper. The one on the rear has to be folded back to open the trunk. Does anyone have an info on them. I feel they must not have been original.

I can't speak specifically to your year and model but typically the grill and trunk guards replace the small guards although my 1939 Six had a single one in the center. I imagine that there were several types used but also the dealer may have added them when the car was new so either way they would be authentic, or at least proper for the period.

Having owned an all-original 1937 120 C for 29 years, I'd say they are 1937 bumper guards. It looks like they carried the bumper bars over, so those guards fit the bars perfectly. For 1937 the recessed area of the bumper bar was painted black.

My 38 coupe has those guards 2 in front and 2 in the back.
