It should go up first, then forward with the bottom end coming out first. If I remember right there are hooks at the top that hold it on, plus some sort of wire hoop that holds on either side of the lower. It's been a couple years since I had my seat out last and I'm having a hard time remembering exactly what it was like.

In the bottom two corners of the seat there is bent metal going thru a loop in the seat which holds it in. Straight the tangs with needle nose, pull the bottom off the tangs, then lift up.

On seats with a center armrest, pull the armrest down and then gently push the flap of upholstery covering the back to one side. There should be an opened space to the cushion. On the 47 seat there are bolts on either side of the armrest sort of behind the cushion edges that thread into a plate on the X brace. The same may be true for later seats. 47 bolts are positioned in the upper third of the distance between the top and bottom of seatback so look towards the top.

I may need to just wiggle and push upwards a bit harder, but I like to know what I'm dealing with so I can take things apart as gently as possible.

47 also has screws at the bottom including two at the center for armrest but in this photo of a 54 Pacific there is also a threaded plate at the top similar to the 47 version. It may be as you said and your car does not have any more screws and something is just binding the cushion but with an armrest it would not hurt to double check for hidden screws.

My 1954 Patricians also have the screws behind the center armrest. In fact, all my 1951-1954 Packards had them so I would be surprised if the 1953 Cavalier did not.

Thank you Howard & Packard Don, you guys were right! Two bolts at the top behind the fabric flap.
I'm working to rebuild the seats over the winter in my basement, I don't think I'll show this to the wife!  That's just stuffing to keep the springs quiet, right?!?!  This little aluminum tag was in, not under, the back seat. Who is EH MACAULAY? Did he assemble the seat?
