Front Door Window - 1955 Caribbean
#1

It appears that the door window on my car are shorter than they should. Even when the top window stop is removed it can not be raised high enough to reach up to the height it should be. The width appears to be correct. Does someone out there know what the height of the window is suppose to be.

Also, are there instructions for removing the door window when they are electrically operated?

Instructions are in the electrical manual p.41.

No such thing as too short windows. Something must be out of adjustment somewhere. Send a photo?

Marty.

The 9/16 nut center of door.

Loosen it and pull all the way up and hold glass. Up position.

You'll see door is slotted

I had already used the 9/16 inch nut trying to get the window as high as possible. In addition, I removed the 2 stops that prevent to widow from going to high.

With the metal channel on the bottom of the glass hitting the felt track at the top of the door the window is 3/8 to 1/2 inch short. I'm guessing that the glass has been replaced and is to short. While the passenger side window is OK, I don't want to use it, as the A pillar was replace after the initial (previous owners) when it was found to be an inch to short (this was done during then initial restoration around 2003).

I don't get why someone would make glass purposefully too short. I might be able to measure the height of the glass in my hardtop tomorrow and get you a number.

I have an extra passenger side vent window lying around if you need one.

measure the height of the window wing assembly ,see if its the same on right door,
car might have a 400 wing assembly instead of the 55 Caribbean, there shorter
i have put 400 door glasses in a Caribbean, but i never measured the Caribbean windows i took out, they went in the junk now ,as far as removing the window, just two clips and its out, never seen a easier window to remove from a car

The Caribbeans use the same side glass as the hardtop. But the windshield is different.

The glass is 13 1/2". The motor is sluggish going up and is slower than the passenger side.

So I'll replace the motor to see if that solves the issue. There is some sloppiness in the scissor mechanism that, which may be the cause.

When I had the car painted, they glued the felt strip that is at the top of the door on. Is it suppose to be screwed on with short sheet metal screws?

Right and left wind wings are the same height.

Not sure this is the best approach as all the motors out there are used. I would disconnect the motor from both doors and then run them with the switch. You can tell by the pitch of each motor how fast it is going. If they are still not the same speed, either lubricate the motor or I can sell you a refurbished motor. If they then go the same speed, you know then that there is binding or friction in either the mechanism or tracks.

Yes and there is also a gasket 475091 that that is supposed to go under them, and the screws have rectangular washers. I have not measured it but the gasket is probably 3/32 thick. I have a template for it.

Also do the foldables work well? They should close when the door closes and open easily with the door. You can test this by pressing the hidden button by the vent window with your thumb when the door is open. It should easily "snap" back and forth. Also there is supposed to be plastic on that button as an anti-squeak.

If you have a bit of cash to throw at this I can get you set up with new gaskets, exact reproduction rectangular washers, new self-tapping screws, and properly refurbished foldables. I need to do this project on my 400 anyway, so it can be a win-win where I am doing it in bulk, and you get a better price than anyone else doing this. Let's say for $250 all together I will get you 10 repro stainless rectangular washers, 10 new self-tappers, 2 new gaskets, separate all steel hardware from the stainless steel on the foldables, de-rust and zinc plate, rivet back on in the original style, lubricate the mechanism, and new plastic (if needed) on the buttons. This is effectively just paying for the cost of materials for all this, with free labor. But it will allow me to do my pair at the same time. Hopefully I can also find some strip for the outside interior.
