Found the post below in the Chatroom. Will PM "clip47" and also respond in Chat that I've re-posted his question here.

[clip47] 5:22 am: Hi, I'm new to this, but have a question. I have a '47 245 apart and want to know how much I can mill the head without Valve problems. The #$%^&* ustion chamber measures 96cc. Thanks

My first swag would be about .060 for maybe half a point, but you need to check the space over your valves. Still, the biggest bang for your buck will be a nice simple porting job, and smoothing out the edges of the little saucer that the valves sit down in.

I wouldn't go anymore than is necessary to clean up a warped head. If you go too much you will create thin spots in the head that will eventually lead to cracks and failure of the head.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll go 0.030 and put it back together.

Unless you're certain it hasn't been milled at some point in the past, I'd check the clearance over the valves before I arbitrarily settled on 0.030". Using a dab of modelling clay on the valve heads is a method I've used successfully, though there are others.

Thanks again for the advise. I'll use the clay - good idea. I cc'd the head and it measured 96cc so if it has been milled in the past they did not take much off. Still, better safe than sorry.

You just gotta love someone who cc's a head before comtemplating milling it! Don't have the data handy for the 1947 version, but for the 245 Six in 1938 Packard listed combustion chamber volumes as:

99-101 cc for the standard 6.52 CR head
102.5-106.5 cc for the 6.3 CR head
88.5 - 92.5 ccs for the 6.85 and 7.05 (alum) CR heads

I'm getting ready to install new valve guides and wonder if anyone has installed valve stem seals on the intake valves of a flathead? It looks like a GM seal will fit within the spring if the bottom of the guide is turned before the guide is installed. Any thoughts? This is my first Packard engine. Thanks.

Valve stem seals not required or desired.

Have fun changing the guides, they can be challenging.
