The 47 Super Clipper chassis was defined by a 356 engine so I'd say your friend was misinformed. Ive seen a few over the years that were illadvisedly fitted with a 288 as a replacement engine, perhaps that's what your friend observed.

Would cars that were designated for export been fitted with 288s in place of the 356s? Just curious.

Kev, the export models may have had lower compression ratios for the generally poorer grades of gasoline abroad, but a Super Clipper was still a Super Clipper.

One more word on this: The 288 engine was not introduced until the 22nd series 1948 models, and was continued through to the 54th series 1954 models. The engine in production in 1947 was the 282 version. I suppose a 288 could have been installed to replace a 356 at some time in the past like O_D said.
