6 cyl in a 55...another wacky idea?

Looks like the '54 I was contemplating a 6cyl transplant into may be sold, but I know of a solid '55 with a frozen engine, and I'm still fixated on this 6cyl in newer body idea ... so would a '47 six and 3 spd trans fit into a '55 engine bay without major surgery?

I know the firewall stamping is different than 54 and realize engine mounts etc would need dealing with, but I'd like to try something really different like this. I'd originally thought a straight 8 in a '55/56, but I like this idea even better. Call it a real retirement challenge. Thoughts?

There were a few Ford 8N or 9N tractors produced with flta head F v/8's. If i had the 6 cylinder Packard engine i'd look at a tractor conversion. Probably a Ferguson TO20/30 or 35.

Should be pretty ez since the engine from the factory in the To20 and the 8/9N's are the front 1/2 of the tractors chassis. Basically just bolt the tractor front axleto the front of the Packard engine.

Maybe a Pickup truck application???? Real interesting for a Ranger/S10 or maybe Dakota. Studbaker PU or maybe a Kaiser or Hudson car.

BTW: The Ferguson and red bellied Ford tractors are plentiful and rather cheap to buy especialy if they are not running. Plenty of parts still available too at relatively cheap prices.

A tractor can be a lot of fun. I really like my 1951 TO20. Great for plowing snow and mowing lawn. Very economical and useful piece of equipment. The Packard 6 cylinder would give it alot more power too.

Used to have an 8N when we had the farm, but not much use on a 1/4 ac suburban lot since we've retired. And the goal of all this is a 54-55 Packard car with a Packard Six.

I'm in interested in knowing whether a 245 Six cyl will physically fit into a '55 engine bay. I don't have them available to measure.

No, this is beyond wacky! The idea a '55 would benefit from less power, less torque, less efficient engine; in fact, just reading the question makes my head hurt.

Save yourself being involved in minor weirdness and go for complete nutso with a Waukesha diesel !!

That car was on eBay recently, listed in Montana and sold for $2500 right away. I wonder why it is back on CL at a different location?

Well, as said at the beginning, speed is not as issue with me, so lower power machts nichts. Just want a fun putt around at 30 mph town car, a real econo '55, as if Packard had made one. And it'd probably be more reliable dead stock than those finicky, cantankerous V8s

A diesel, while interesting (I had a Peugeot 504 diesel back in the day, proof positive that I'm odd) wouldn't be all Packard. Chrysler put Perkins diesels in some 50s Plymouths, but I don't believe Packard ever dieselized a car. I'd like to know if a 245 Six would fit lengthwise.

Sorry, no measurements. But for 1955 Packard essentially put a V8 into the space previously occupied by a straight 8. Why might you think a Packard 6 which is considerably shorter than the in-line 8 wouldn't fit easily? Or am I missing something here?

The 51-54 cars had a recessed area in the fire wall to accommodate some of the length of the Straight 8. I don't believe the 55-56 cars had that. But even with out that, a Straight 6 will fit. The 6s, like the pre 1951 8s were front mount. So you would have to get creative with the motor mounts. Also I don't believe any of the 6s had the side mounting holes in the block to support the 51-54 style side mounting.
