What colors are they supposed to be and are they supposed to light up when the headlights are on? Are they a pain to change?

Were the jewels a Packard Approved Accessory????? There were other aftermarket headlite jewels available in a variety of styles and color.

AFAIK they are original. The spare headlight and bar set I have has them too, minus one jewel.

They were not an accessory, this is how all these cars were built. All were green. '29 round, 30-32 pear shaped as pictured

BTW is there a passage or opening in the reflector for the light from the headlight bulb to get to the jewel?

Was the intent of the jewel to show the driver when a headlight bulb had burned out, or are they purely cosmetic?

Some non-original headlight jewels, the shade is made to fit into the gap between the headlight lens and lens retainer:

Both our headlights have green jewels. I saw some on EBay and was wondering if one wasn't supposed to be red. Thanks to all for the info.

There is a hole in the reflector that allows light from the bulb to shine through the green jewel allowing you to see when the lights are on. The jewels are held in a thin metal trim frame which is secured to the lights by a wire clip.

There are easy to take out. I had to remove mine to get the buckets plated.
