Hello I posted this before, but we are getting farther along. But this has been in my friends family for quit some time. They were all driven to grade school in this baby. It has been warehoused for 20+ years, now and is not in the best of shape. We have major rust. The large parts have been sent to strip, so we can see what we have to work with... I will keep yous updated as we go...

If you have access to the latest issue of the Packard Cormorant, there is an interesting proposal and a custom one off of the authors 57 Hawk. He did a new front end using the Packard grill shape and turned it into a "what if" Packard Hawk.

I've always been intrigued by the 1958 Packard Hawk - I can't help wondering where and who came up with the catfish-head front end design. Still, a Packard sporty-type car to compete with the Ford Thunderbird and Chevrolet Corvette is an interesting prospect, especially had it come several years earlier when Packard still had some money for design and engineering. I wonder how that Hawk would have rode with a torsion-level suspension system?

Moving even further forward, anyone give thought to a Packard version of the Avanti? Possibilities abound.

Believe several articles mentioned the Hawk was done by Duncan McRae under the personal direction of Roy Hurley when Hurley was running things. Some of them also mentioned styling had thought that was to be a one off personal car for him. The styling dept apparently was as surprised as any when instructions were given to put it into production.

The Avanti is an interesting idea. I thought it was pretty good as it was but maybe a new front end would be intriguing as well.

As to torsion level, I wonder if Studebaker would have been willing to beef up the frame--even if money was available. Ever since Loewy, they seemed to favor light cars--particularly in frames. I believe that was one of the weaknesses on the Hawk and coupe lines. IIRC the 2 door frames were lightweight and had a nasty habit of flexing and cracking.

This car fell into good hands! I'm particularly interested in the tires, of all things. They are evidently bias ply and all four look like they have good tread on them, and no uneven wear or scrubbing to speak of. If the had a fair amount of miles on them when the car was stored, it looks like the suspension and alignment were not a problem with this car at all.

Any idea of the original mileage on the car? The dash pad looks like it's in particularly good shape, indicating it was garaged during its life as well.
