At this moment I am overhauling the engine of my 1938 Packard Super Eight type 1603.
Who can help me out with the correct tichtening torque for the crankshaft bearings nut and the connecting rod lower bearings
nut.

G'day Hans,

According to Motors Manual, for 38 Packard Super Eight 1603.

Crankshaft bearings nuts: 45-50 65-70 Lbs. Ft.

Connecting rod nuts: 65-70 45-50 Lbs. Ft.

I think previous post is reversed and torque should be:

Crankshaft main bearings nuts: 65-70 Lbs. Ft.

Connecting rod nuts: 45-50 Lbs. Ft.

Motors Auto Repair Manual is a large volume which covers numerous US cars for the period it was printed and some years before. In my 1952 issue, a book of 819 pages, the Packard specific section is 42 pages and covers from 1935 to 1952. It also has sections on specific areas, see photo #2.

I also have a 1956 volume covering 1946 to 1956 with 1023 pages, 31 pages of which cover Packards. Seeing I'm now the owner of a 1950 Packard, having recently sold my 1941 Coupe, I would be willing to sell the older volume. It's a bit "tatty", mainly from use, the binding is coming apart, has one page torn out while three other pages are half torn out. All these pages are in the Ignition Section covering distributors and generators. I think, but can't guarantee, that little Packard specific info has been lost by this. If interested, send me a PM. In the meantime I'll check with our Post Office for a shipping cost.

Or you can look on eBay or Amazon or similar.

Whoa! Just had a look at eBay, many MM's there, and I don't think I can compete on price, suggest you'd best look there!

I think eBay or whatever is probably the way to go but if you want to take up my offer it'll be Book = $40.00AUD and shipping $46.00AUD for Sea Mail which is 30+ days delivery or the "cheapest" airmail $65.00AUD which has delivery in about 9 days. I think both are non tracking, tracking being more expensive still. Could have been cheaper if it weighed less than 1.5kg, it weighs 1.6+kg! And to get the sea mail rate I'll have to add weight to bring it up to 2+kg!

According to your advice I have looked at EbaY and indeed there are a lot of repair manuals.
In the meantime I have bought a number of books including the "1935-1952 Motors Car Repair Manual 15th Edition Shop Service Book for US Models".
I believe this book is the same as yours.
So I make no use of your offer.

Hans, you may want to buy a Motors Flat Rate manual. These manuals are helpful as they identify parts and have illustrations of parts and sub assemblies in addition to the standard time to perform the jobs. They are often offered for sale alongside the repair manuals on eBay. Also, check with Amazon. JWL
