4.07 gear, need a 12 bolt vs 16...?

This is a longshot but WTH, right? We have 16 bolt (ring gear mounting bolts) 4.07 gear which fits the Super 8 and 12 for 33-4-5-6. We need a 12 bolt (ring gear bolts) set for a 33-4-5-6-7 8 cylinder chassis. This is needed specifically for a 1934 1101 Conv Victoria. I'm hoping someone may have or know someone who has a 12 bolt set and may even need a 16 bolt set instead. It's a new gear but just wrong for our purpose. If that fails, is there someone in the midwest (or within a day's drive of Motown) that has a complete Super 8 rear axle to sell? Either option is desirable and thanks in advance for any leads or parts.

Is this what you want?

Excellent 4.09:1 ring and pinion (no differential, etc.). Ring stamped Packard part #347840, pinion #311914, 45-11 (4.09:1) from '47 Super, will fit many junior and senior Packards late '30s through 1950.

If so, go to the "For Sale" on this blog.

Good Luck

There was a change around 38-9 and that gear fits a lot of Packard models. Sadly I don't think it fits ours. I have an info packet coming on the whole fitment chart. If it turns out we can use that I'll be in touch. Thank you.

It not mine, it is a post by su8overdrive under "For Sale, Wanted, Trade" that I happened to see and wanted to call to your attention.

Highlander, I guess I'm a bit confused on this, can't you just purchase the needed ring and pinion set from whomever took over the Phil Bray inventory?

I do have a complete spare 1934 1100/1101/1102 differential, not sure if I'd be willing to part with it, but it's either a 4.36 or a 4.69 so I assume you have no interest.

Apparently there's a glitch in production on the new gears. Every date and request ends up getting pushed back. This is the info I got from 2 different Packard guys in need of a gear and several concur. I suppose it's normal to learn there are fewer 8 cylinder gears around vs Super 8 and 12. The 8 cylinder cars have just begun to come into wider desirability over the last 8-10 yrs. I've been a fan of the 8 over the other 2 since I became aware of Packard motorcars, and frankly I don't think there's a better driving senior Packard than 1101, 1201, etc. Perfect balance of power, weight and handling. My dear departed mother could steer an 8 with one hand. She was like 5'4" but I think she exaggerated that just a bit :D. Yes my fellow Packard enthusiasts, I know I'm preaching to the choir here.

In my talks with the owner I've been wondering about how much real change he could feel going to a 4.36 vs his 4.69. It's not as if we're looking for 65-70 MPH highway speeds. More like having that reserve of power so that you have 1 more pedal available to get you out of trouble. Right now she's working hard at 50. Geez, my Model A pickup likes that speed and we expect more from a Packard, right? Also, from my hot rod/street race days (did I say street race?), minor gear changes made a big difference. 3.90 to 4.30, 4.56 to 4.88, etc. I sort of think 4.69 to 4.36 might be just right. Am I too optimistic with that thought? All opinions and experiences welcome.
