For the simplest installation, I suggest an R-11 unit from a 49 or 50. The relay and the internal mechanism is simpler and it will fit your 110 just fine.
You need to avoid a unit from a Custom Eight (as if you could even find one) as it has the large input shaft that will not go into your clutch.

How does one identify an overdrive for a Custom Eight?

On second thought, knowing several '40 owners who have gone the original or later unit path, it seems to me installing a correct 1940 unit is probably easier if you are going the DIY path. Wiring harness is available per original, as are all other original parts. Why mess with original?
And Tom, the easiest way to tell is to look at the input shaft tip - pilot bearing diameter for the Custom 8 is about 3/4", whereas the 110/120 unit is about 1/2".

If the shaft checks out as being senior, could you verify another point for my failing memory.
I believe it was mentioned on the R9's at least, the larger ODs with 4 planetary or pinion gears used on Customs is designated R9-1 near the lockout lever. Smaller units with 3 gears used on junior cars are plain R9s. Would appreciate knowing if that is a true statement. If so, don't know if that holds for R11's.

That agrees with the unit on my 48 Custom 8 which was a factory installation.

1940 6 & 8: AS1-R9 1941-48 6 & 8: AS2R9 All Su8 and Custom 8: AS1-R9A I understand also that the clutch shaft can be misleading as Packard switched to the junior clutch shaft in later years for all applications. Picture attached. Hope this helps. Pat Attach file: (22.70 KB)

Tom - that is a junior overdrive. And it's been out for a long time by the looks of the input shaft splines. Suggest you open the top cover to determine If water has gotten in.
