A 356 being hydraulic lifters, you would assume the oil filter would have been standard equipment.

An oil filter was standard equipment on all 356 engines. The canister/filter was missing from my '50 Custom. I replaced it with a used canister from Kanter.
More details on the filter can be found here. Edit: The filter on a 356 should be plumbed in a bypass mode to ensure adequate oil pressure to the hydraulic lifters. This requires a 'T' brass fitting to accommodate: 1. Line out to filter. 2. Oil pressure sender. 3. Pigtail bypass out to lifter gallery. Here's a photo of a filter in bypass mode on a 327 9 main engine... different engine, same concept.

Good advice from JD. I would like to add that you assure there is a restriction in the oil filter or in the "T" fitting. Restricted oil flow through the filter will insure sufficient flow and pressure to the hydraulic lifters.

Not to be overly redundent, but there is a statement in the 1941 Packard Data Book, on page 101, that the One-Sixty (356) engine is equipped with a two stage oil filter and that it was an option for the One-Ten and One-Twenty.
Photo also shows the plumbing - see below:

One question would be the plumbing shown on that original 41 illustration. This threadpackardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb ... ic.php?post_id=67387#forumpost67387 in post 31 mentions several service articles on rerouting filter flow because of noisy lifters. Weren't the post war 356s more in line with the later 8's as shown in JD's photo?
