1948 or 1949 22nd series?

I have a 22nd series Packard Custom eight Convertible that is missing the data plate, How do I know If this car is a 1948 or a 1949? Briggs Body # is 2259-2200, I have engine number and firewall number but I believe that none of these can tell me whether this is a 48 or a renumbered 49 without a data plate. Am I correct or am I missing something? Thanks for any responses!!

EDITED.

Almost certainly based on the Briggs number your car was built as a 1948 22nd Series car. Whether it was sold as such or as a renumbered 1949 22nd Series car is impossible to tell without the VN.

It surely is a shame that so many Packards have been separated from their most important identifying number.

And please, delete all your duplicate posts.

Copied from other post, so OP can delete that one:

AFAIK if the Briggs plate says 22nd series (22##-####) then it's a 22nd series. 2200 is pretty low so I doubt it was sold as a 1949. The 49's had 22##-9 from the factory, too.

IIRC the body number and VIN number don't usually match, but they are similar in numerical value.

Looks like you hit the submit button more than once. Please delete your 3 duplicate posts.

Other than the Briggs, motor and theft proof numbers, the only difference between a 1948 and a 1949 22nd Series car was the vehicle number. ANY leftover unsold 1948 model could have been issued a new patent plate with a 22nd Series 1949 VN, thus allowing the selling dealer to avoid the discounted sales price that a year-old leftover would have had. It's not possible to tell without the VN or original dealer sales invoice or equivalent.

Pretty much the same MO used over at Chrysler Corp.

According to the roster of 1948-50 convertibles, your car's number 2259-2200 would have been originally delivered in November 1947. Number 2259-2189 was delivered on November 15, while number 2259-2224 was delivered on November 17.

Dave, thanks, I'm aware of the 48th-to-49th rebadging, but considering it's roughly the 200th of 1300 made that year, I would figure that the chances that it was not off the lot until the 49 model year were slim.

Agreed, you could assume that and I would too. Just that it's not a certainty and that's what I thought the OP was seeking.

Thank You for all the responses. I have tried to educate myself on how all of this works and find it very confusing. This helps a lot!!

nikspack have you browsed the Packard Club rosters for your car? You may be able to find a match for one of your other numbers and at one time the vin was recorded there.

Not likely but possible.
