That's interesting. There should only be the 2 wires on coil-- yellowish from ign switch and the other to the dist. The yellow would go on the neg terminal.
Should be 3 wires off generator, 2 going to voltage regulator from A & F and 1 ground going to a screw near or at headlight junction block on L fender. Are the wires from the temp and oil sender still hooked up properly? Anything else and probably someone has added something--maybe an electric fuel pump or something needing a switched source?

This is from a '54 diagram. But it should be almost exactly the same as not much changed as far as the ignition and charging system is concerned.

There would be a 3rd wire if it was overdrive equipped, wouldn't there be? The momentary kickdown coil kill wire?

Owen_D you're correct. Forgot all about that possibility.
It would be a greenish with black tracer wire coming from kickdown switch and connecting to same + terminal as one from distributor. Now to figure out the generator & am a loss unless they're the temp or oil senders.
