Transmission works as it should when put in gear, but does not automatically shift when put in "D" low gear to high gear. The torque converter no longer automatically engages.

Probably the low speed governor flyweight has detached. You should drop the pan and confirm it's still attached.

I'll get a photo in a few minutes.

The low speed governor flyweight is crimped onto the governor valve as shown by the arrow. If yours has detached, hopefully it will be undamaged in the bottom of the pan. A welding shop can tack weld it back on, then you should take a file and file down the excess weld.

The unit above is the high range governor which you can leave in place.

You can remove the low range governor by having the transmission in Neutral then spinning the rear wheels to get the governor pointing down. Then remove it with a T handle. This is also shown in the manual.

Also, to be clear, I suspect you are also not feeling the converter lock up? If you do, then your linkage is just too loose causing you to skip Drive when you actuate the shifter.

Just for clarification, when you say put in "D" do you mean the dart to the left of the "D" or the dart to the right? See the images below.
