Quite a regular

The idle screws will only affect mixture at idle. Moving them out counterclockwise will richen the mixture.

Thanks, I will try that. Incidently, when the motor starts to stall, I can drip gas into the carb and it will continue to run.

It sounds like a fuel pressure issue to me so best thing is to start a diagnosis before adjusting anything. Get a fuel pressure test gauge at your local auto supply shop. They're inexpensive and will be really helpful for sorting out this type of thing. If the pressure is good, then a carburetor rebuild is likely in order.

The ceramic fuel element could be partially clogged also.

Thanks, At this stage I'll try anything. I have the work manual for the car, so !'ll check the presure spec. Incidentally, I only have a 6 volt electric pump. Someone had already removed the mechanical pump when I purchased the car.

My thought - if it idles with the choke closed, that means it is getting enough fuel to the carb (because it WILL idle).
So there is something clogged in the carb itself. Might make sense to take the carb off and blow out all the passages with carburetor cleaner. IF the car has a filter, it would be on the line that goes from the fuel pump to the carburetor, at the inlet to the carb. You should have a rubber hose for part of the line to the carb (shouldn't be a hard line the whole way becaue the engine is on rubber mounts). So you could replace that rubber line with a clear line - if there is fuel in that line, the carb is getting fuel. It doesn't need a lot to idle!
