Purchased Packard Clipper 2dr. 6cyl. No data plates, came with 1947 ownership. Now I'm questioning the year after starting restoration. It has 1942 grille, the speedo and clock have large #s, date on back of clock is Apr. 41. All I have to identify the car is the theft # on firewall <6446642>. Any help would be appreciated.

You've got 1 too many digits in your thief-proof number but if the first 3 digits you gave are correct it's a 1942.

G'day Loui,
to PackardInfo and, now that you've identified your Clipper as a '42, I invite you to include it in the Packard Owner's Registry here on PackardInfo!

Loui for including your '42 Clipper Club Sedan in the Registry. Plus, is it possible to post a pic of your car? Reason I ask will be obvious from the paragraph below.

BigKev or anyone, looking at the 1942 Model Year in Packard Model Information there are no Clippers listed! Only 110, 120, 160 & 180's, is that right? Loui's '42 is currently identified in the Registry as a '42 110 Six Special Club Sedan, if it's a Clipper a little massaging needs to be done!

Hi BigKev I'm not really knowledgeable on the packards at all. We we're told it was a 1947 with an ownership but things did not add up when we tore the car apart.Looking in the registry there is a 110 six special club sedan owner Crotomac in Minnesota that looks just like ours, and ours has the script Clipper on the doors under the chrome.

Actually, there are four (4) models identified as Clipper, by title, in this site's Model Info feature for 1942 (20th Series): two on chassis 2003, bodies 1572 and 1575, and two on chassis 2006, bodies 1522 and 1525.

Now, I didn't compose these pages, let alone their titles, but our archive is a bit short on materials for 42. What little we do have seems to rely on chassis and body numbers, rather than official model names. Even the cherised books that have been published in years since Packard went out of production aren't very clear or consistent when it comes to full model naming conventions for this abbreviated year.

I don't think the 42s were identified as 110, 120, 160 and 180, except in the parts book - certainly not the Clippers. For marketing purposes, it seems to me that model names were categorized by Six and Eight (with either available in Special or Custom form), Super Eight One-Sixty, and Custom Super Eight One-Eighty. The word 'Clipper' then gets lost in some awkward naming conventions. Yet, 'Clipper' was not applied to chassis/bodies that carried over from 41 - convertibles, and customs, and a taxicab that could not be accomodated by the new platform.

So, after a lot of head-scratching, here's what I've come up with:

2000 1582 Special Six Clipper Touring Sedan
2000 1585 Special Six Clipper Club Sedan
2000 1588 Special Six Clipper Business Coupe
2001 1592 Special Eight Clipper Touring Sedan
2001 1595 Special Eight Clipper Club Sedan
2001 1598 Special Eight Clipper Business Coupe
2003 1572 Super Eight One-Sixty Clipper Touring Sedan
2003 1575 Super Eight One-Sixty Clipper Club Sedan
2004 1562 Super Eight One-Sixty Touring Sedan *
2005 1570 Super Eight One-Sixty Touring Limousine *
2005 1571 Super Eight One-Sixty Touring Sedan *
2006 1522 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Clipper Touring Sedan
2006 1525 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Clipper Club Sedan
2006 1529 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Special Darrin Victoria Convertible *
2007 1532 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Formal Sedan *
2007 1542 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Touring Sedan *
2008 1520 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Touring Limousine by LeBaron *
2008 1521 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Touring Sedan by LeBaron *
2008 1550 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Touring Limousine *
2008 1551 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty Touring Sedan *
2008 _894 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty All Weather Cabriolet by Rollson *
2008 _895 Custom Super Eight One-Eighty All Weather Town Car by Rollson *
2010 1502 Custom Six Clipper Touring Sedan
2010 1505 Custom Six Clipper Club Sedan
2011 1512 Custom Eight Clipper Touring Sedan
2011 1515 Custom Eight Clipper Club Sedan
2020 1589 Special Six Convertible Coupe *
2021 1599 Custom Eight Convertible Coupe *
2023 1579 Super Eight One-Sixty Convertible Coupe *
2030 1584 Special Six Taxicab *
2055 1590 Super Eight One-Sixty Business Limousine *
2055 1591 Super Eight One-Sixty Business Sedan *

(* = not a Clipper)

Yet, before I go changing anything in the actual Model Info master file, I'd like you to review these model names and advise of any changes needed, here.

Meanwhile, some of the longer names could end up a few characters longer than before. I only bring this up as I have no way of knowing whether that will pose a problem for any exisiting field width specifications. I'll check this again once things are firmed up.

Once we're in agreement on the naming conventions, I'll cut-n-paste the revised titles to the model records, and then you can massage any existing entries in the Owner Registry, as needed.
