V12 HOT ROD

The picture below is of a chopped Peterbilt 351 cab with a 852 cid Detroit Diesel two stroke V12 engine. The engine is equipped with twin superchargers producing 500 horsepower with 1000lbs. of torque with a redline 2800 rpms.

That V12 hot rod would certainly make one heck of a tow vehicle.

John, this is some vehicle! It always amazes me what people will do to have a different car. What are the covers on the cylinder heads for? I thought 2-cycle engines did not have valves, but could be mistaken. Thanks for sharing.

2-stroke DIESELS have exhaust valves but no intake valves.

Thanks for the 2-stroke Diesel exhaust valve information. I learned something new today.

The DIESEL 2-stroke is more of a hybrid between a gas supercharged 4-stroke and a gas 2-stroke engine. The major difference is that a GAS 2-stroke depends on a SEALED crankcase that doubles as an intake manifold.

The 2-stroke deisels (that i'm familiar with) have a normal crankcase like a normal gas 4-stroke engine has. So the blower on the 2-stroke diesel is mandatory, not just a perfomance enhancer.

And instead of intake valves, there are ports in the cylinders, just like on a 2-cycle gas engine. But like PackardV8 points out, no pressurized crankcase or "reed valve" like on your typical chainsaw 2-stroke.

2-stroke diesels are really an ingenious design. This 'splaiins it pretty well:

Skip the video, it's worthless.

This is my dream V12 conversion... but it should be a Packard body, and a Packard branded Merlin--which I believe are the only ones actually used in P51 Mustangs.

youtube.com/watch?v=SIj2GVfua84

There are lots of copies of this segment around. It's very popular on youtube. Too bad it's all talk of Chevies and Rolls Royce Merlins. But if they want to do the work, they get to do it their way!

Now that I know what my dream conversion would entail, I'm glad someone else did it. This thing is practically a life's work.
