Am in the process of adding air to a 54 Clipper Packup I am building. Thought you all might like to see how I have worked out the compressor mounting. Note that I am using the PS drive belt for the compressor. This saves the trouble of ginning up a special crank pulley and the attendant length stackup troubles. The comp mount is made from a length of square tube that sits over the first three studs. Since the nuts tighten to the inner surface of the tube, longer studs are not necessary. The slotted mounts are readily available universal Sanden mounts cut down and welded to the tube. It is quite rigid.

After the cool success of the fan shroud on my Panamericana car, I have made one for this car as well. I am reasonably sure it will obviate the need for all manner of noisy and power robbing fans. The shroud is split in two halves for removal for service.

Lastly, the car is going to 12 volts so have fabricated a new mount for a GM single wire alternator.

That has to be one of the cleanest and incredibly simple to make brackets ever devised. Is that 2x2 tube? How thick? Do you think 1 x 2 x .12 or maybe a bit wider would work equally well?

Here we are all "done up". The tube for the mounting bracket was 1 1/2 x 2 x .09. Wider tube will not lay between the sparkplugs and the manifold.

The AC unit selected also does heat and defrost so all the heater bits have been deleted. On cars without heaters Packard did supply a vent just like on the driver's side so I have put that in.

It looks great!

From the front end, I notice there is no idler pulley for the AC/PS belt and was wondering if there was enough contact on the pulleys and crank under load conditions. I know the original 1954 set up I bought had an extra idler pulley for a taut belt (and others I've seen on here). Just wondering.

Cool work Ross haha. For a second I thought that was my Clipper. The Color of the Firewall looks about the same as mine. Ross must have elves that work for him at night, since the one day I was there I didn't see any helpers.

7 years later I assume no belt whipping issues with the long belt? It looks great.

Thanks

I think Ross shares the PS pulley or adds one on cars without PS to drive the compressor. That leaves the stock fan, pump, and generator belt as is so no slippage to be concerned about.
