Nifty piece, thanks for posting! It's a second series (or later) Twin Six, as determined by the detachable cylinder heads. First series Twin Sixes were cast en-bloc with internal parts all installed from below.

It is newer than a series II (1917) if the transmission photo is from the same car. 1917 had a transmission with a side shiftier.

Somewhere I have a picture of a 1st series Twin Six engine taken at Warren in 1999; it will be hell to find but I'll take a browse this evening.

Two-wheel brakes on the rear. I forget the purpose of the little aluminum dome, but I'm sure bevpor will identify it as he is familiar with these cars, more so than I am.

And they said things were simple then. Looks like you'd almost need an owners manual to make sure the right combination of lights were on. What does the aux ignition do?

And bevpor from Dave's reference if you have a Packard, maybe a Twin Six perchance, could you please include it in the Packard Owner's Registry here, together with a pic, any known history and how you acquired it?

Gerd,

It almost looks like some kind of a early "repair" belt that could be adapted to several applications for a quick road side repair.

That's a very standard and common type of belt on early cars. Don't know whether it's OEM-style or not, but common.

This is what is known as a "link belt". Still in use today for lots of industrial uses. For at least the 29's it was an alternative to a solid belt. To install a solid belt the rad. and vib. damp. had to be removed for clearance at the front crossmember. A link belt was a easy repair and is mentioned in the 29 service lit.

At the Veteren Car & Motorbike Day I attended this morning one of the bikes present had a "link belt" as the driving belt to the rear wheel while others used rubber V belts.
