Don't remember the 54 but sure don't think that method would work on a 56. There is nothing like a slot on those to turn if I understand the process. Actually don't remember a slot on any 51 on, just a screw head which might be slotted but to open the trunk would require turning in the direction to loosen.

I have never tried it on a Packard. GM, and I believe Ford, have a slot in the lock on the rear. If the trunk key were long enough, it would extend through the slot in the rear of the lock.
From the illustrations in this post, I would combine several very long extensions and try for the bolts on the lower latch.
