Wasn't there also a difference in the water pump location between 1948-50 and 51-54 engines??

Yes, Wat is correct and inversely, it will not work the other way around as the earlier engines do not have the casting points and threaded holes to use the side mounts needed in a ‘51-‘54 Packard.
