If I applied a hot wire to the grounded solenoid what number connection should I touch to energize the solenoid?

Well yes and no. I understand that is how it is to work, but nothing is happening. What number connection on the solenoid do I hot wire to engage the R9 solenoid directly?

R 9 solenoid needs 2 terminals hooked up to stay in. With case grounded, 4 is the heavy pull in coil and as soon as that comes in, internal contacts open. 3 also needs to have power at the same time for the hold in coil to keep it energized. If 3 is not powered, it will "machine gun" as long as power is on 4.
