Marston:
I agree with you completely when idiots with too much disposable income decide to turn a rare, valuable car like that '35 (or the awful '36 120) into a custom, hot rod, or worse yet, low-rider. Even more bizarre is when someone takes the body off an antique car and installs it atop a monster truck! That said, I don't get too worked up when someone takes a Packard that would otherwise be scrapped and customizes it. While it is individual taste, I see that as giving new life to an otherwise doomed car. I have actually seen a few Packard custom jobs that were masterfully done and are beautiful and practical drivers. I would never do this to my Clipper, but to each his own. (I've got a bad feeling that I am about to be hammered!)

You can make a lot of really neat things from the parts left over after you rebuild your engine ...

Hammered? No way, same thing I say. I have cars come to the shop wanting hacked, and I turn them away. I Will NOT Hack a Pack. However, while not my choice either, I will as you stated "Modify" a car that is not realistically restorable to keep it from the heap. No Hammers here, much respect......

The 41 looks like a 2106 Custom Super Clipper. Note 356 engine solenoid and rear door detail.

The 47 is a lovely boat. The black wall tires give it a British flair as though it has been doing service in some remote embassy since 1947!

It can be confusing as the cars had all but identical bodies from 41-7. The obvious difference on the 41 is the narrow fine horizontal bars in the 41-2 vertical part of the grill and the horizontal style plastic dash of the 41. 42 had the same dash style as the 46-7s but the lettering on the speedo and clock was larger with a thicker more block like font. I believe that engine is the 282 with a conventional Bendix starter and regular solenoid. I think what you are seeing as a solenoid is actually the prewar Electromatic clutch control valve. Those were fairly elaborate units and had a large solenoid on the rear operated by transmission switches to modify the clutch engagement speed depending on gear. The postwar valve modified the engagement speed mechanically depending on accelerator position and was smaller and much simpler in comparison.
