I am looking for a manual transmission with overdrive for a 1956 Packard 400. Also need bell housing with clutch assembly. Anyone have a lead?

I have two complete conversion setups available. One overdrive, one straight stick. Including bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, linkage, pedal mechanisms and steering columns. Please PM if interested.

I am in Maryland. $1500 for the straight stick kit, $2100 for overdrive.

I don't recommend overdrive if your rear axle is numerically less than 3.54:1.

I've seen a very few overdrive cars, but never, ever a standard three-speed. In fact, wasn't even on the top of my mind such a thing was available.

Anyone hazard a guess as to how many overdrive and how many standard three-speeds were sold?

Jack,
Thanks for the response....
This will be a major job as there are so many parts besides the transmission to install..
Do yo think I can find a Hurst shifter for the Packard 400?
and then be able to leave the push button column in place.

I will check the differential ratio...Is there a matching one available?

Do you have the entire set up or must I look for additional parts?
I am at

I am also consulting with Stuart Blond at Kanter...

The kits are complete with EVERYthing. To put it in a 400 you will need to have a driveshaft made as these came out of 55 Clippers. I have the 3.9 axles that were standard equipment with either stick or OD, but they are not suitable for mounting in a 400.

I believe the axle in a 56 400 is a Dana 60 so you should be able to just buy about any ratio you desire in the aftermarket. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Should be no problem to buy an aftermarket floor shifter.

I believe that the 56 Sr is Dana 55. I'm not certain of that, but I do have a 1956 400 out back that I could check if push came to shove. As to its resemblance to a Dana 60, I don't know.

Another post says the rear end is a dana90 and can be modified...so I would like to have the overdrive version....if you agree.
How much without the steering column...as I want to keep the push button look...
.
