Interesting oil filter installation on the 40. After market spin on type? Looks like it is made for full flow operation. How does that work on this car?

I vaguely remember someone was making -- or at least advertising -- a spin on filter and adapter assy in the 70s or 80s that could replace the canister style filters. I believe the reason they were being promoted was the more readily available spin ons and easier to change aspect but don't think that is one of them. It must not have been that popular or else very expensive because aside from the ads don't think I've ever seen one on a car.

As I recall, on the item I am thinking of the tubing was different from stock and more hidden than the one on that car but at a quick glance the assy looked proper. There was a bottom cover over the spin on portion which made it look a lot like a canister. I believe the cover screwed on but won't swear to it.

Where is the pig-tail line that feeds the upper valve gallery?

To me, that looks like it comes out of the oil pressure port, goes back thought the filter and dumps back to the pan. Unless the port configuration is different on those older 6's.

The original filter installs were in place of the pigtail and continued that way even on some postwar engines. Solid lifters did OK but engines with hydraulic lifters had issues with low lifter gallery oil pressure and noisy lifters with that arrangement if the filter got clogged.

Packard issued a special filter with a bypass valve as a first attempt to fix the issue. Wasn't entirely successful as the special bypass valve filters were sometimes not used so then added a pigtail and then the pigtail plus metering the oil flow thru the original style filter. That was the final version with the pigtail and orifice metering and is the plumbing as we are used to now.

Nope. They had steering wheel options beginning in 1937.

I think this is a 30 or 31 but I can be wrong. The seller calls it 30's, and "showroom floor condition". Looking at the engine I think he's way off, and so is the asking price.

Its a fine-looking '58 Packard sedan, even very nice original interior (the fabric they used was very fragile and rarely survives) but its hard to imagine anyone giving $36K for one.

on the '32 coupe roadster, what are the telltales that you see. It looks funny to me, too, but I can't put my finger on it. The rear-mounted spare was certainly an oddity on a coupe roadster, but I don't think it was out of the question.
