Royal Purple motor oil - other synthetics

Does anyone use Royal Purple synthetic oil, or other synthetic oils in their Packards? My mechanic was suggesting I use it, but wanted to know about others' experiences. I have a 46 Super Clipper with the 356.

Thanks,
Scott

Do you envision severe duty use or extended change intervals?
Does the motor have all new seals? Then maybe.
Dinosaur juice with sufficient ZDDP & changed most every fall should hold you for decades.

The motor was rebuilt about 1,000 miles ago. And I could see some highway driving, but probably not cross-country kinds of driving.

Synthetic motor oils benefit newer engines that run cleaner and generate fewer waste hydrocarbons, CO, and NOx than old Packards.

So I don't see a reason to use synthetic because the detergency will be used up faster.

Motor is rebuilt and all new... Then synthetic. My two cents.

I think a 15w40 Diesel oil like Shell Rotella would do quite nicely in your engine. I used it for for years in my Packard Super Clipper. Synthetics are fine but really overkill IMO. I think that Mobil 1 15w40 or 15w50 would be an OK choice if your feel the need.

Another good thought just occurred to me.
Likely the best thing you can do for oil & engine cleanliness on these old cars is to add a PVC system.
(Unless you are a purest)

Does Shell Rotella still have "zinc" additive in it? I thought I read where they were going to remove it for better diesel emissions.

Not that Packard engines require any zinc (ZDDP) with their soft cam loadings, but yes it's still present, reduced from about 1300 ppm in the older CI-4 formulations to about 1000 ppm in the current CJ-4 forumulation.

I guess I'm not sure about the difference between Diesel oil and regular oil.
