As I have mentioned in the past, the Packard Proving Grounds has begun scanning 40,000+ documents in our archives.

Phil, one of our volunteers, came across this letter from the President of McFarland Steel of Philadelphia. He owned a model 906, Twin-Six, seven passenger sedan and wanted to let his Packard dealer know his experience with the car.

The letter is attached for your review. He seems pleased enough.

Wow...I wonder what roads were long enough and good enough for such speed. I also wonder if the 1932 Packard could go that fast? If this fellow is telling the truth, then the power and the ride are most impressive! Ernie

The prestigious British publication MoTor found the top speed of an 1100 Eight sedan to be about 86 mph. The Twelves had another 40 or so horsepower but a penalty of several hundred pounds of weight; I'd guess the Twelves in 7-passenger sedan form probably had a top end just a bit more than 90 mph. I do have copies of some proving grounds reports on Twelves, I'll look for them later.

As for safe roads for such speeds, almost nonexistent.

To drive the way we do today, yes you'd either want a high speed ring and pinion, or overdrive, if for nothing else than to give longer engine life. These heavy monsters had quite high (numerically) rear axles. The majority of our roads were still unpaved and those where you could average even 50 or 55 mph were few and the cars were geared accordingly.
