Believe there should be another plate somewhere containing more information. The 58 is a rebadged Studebaker and follows their numbering scheme. According to the 58 supplement to the Studebaker service manual Packard models had 4 designations.
58L-Y8 is the 4 door sedan 58L-P8 is the 4 door station wagon 58L-J8 is the 2 door hard top 58L-K9 is the sport hard top which is the Hawk Starting serial number is 58L-6101 for the Packard and 58LS-1001 for the Hawk. Engine numbers for the Packard start L-101 and for the Hawk, LS-5201

The body ID tag located under hood on fire wall passenger side of car will ID car year body style and build number of body. These tags are attached with screws not welded. This number no direct connection wit serial number.
If you get build sheet from Studebaker National Museum it will have body number engine serial number and serial number of car and other factory installed options. Body numbers are not in order as they were built and last in was usually first out. Serial number is stainless steel spot welded to drivers side door post

I wish folks would stop propagating the myth that the 58 Packard is a rebadged Studebaker. The whole point of the Merger was to get Economies of Scale. Nance worked on the idea or concept of one Platform for the three cars, Packard, Clipper and Studebaker for 1958. Ultimately, They didn’t have the money for a new platform. So the Packard Clipper shared with Studebaker and no Senior cars were produced.
Calling the car “rebadged” is like saying Pontiac is a rebadged Chevy or a DeSoto is a rebadged Plymouth or a Buick is a Rebadged Oldsmobile. They shared a platform. Very little of the outer body Sheetmetal is the same as a Studebaker. Only the Green House. Attach file: packard rear.jpg (72.18 KB)

In 1957 The Packard cars were listed as Packard Clippers. But in 1958 they were just known as Packard.

OK, maybe "rebagded" is a bit of an overstatement, but the 58s are still a Studebaker in Packard clothing.
In the images that you provided, you're comparing apples to oranges. The 58 Packard was not built on the Scotsman shell, but the larger Studebaker President shell (and chassis). Still even the Scotsman fenders, all the way around, have feature lines in common with the Packard. Studebaker merely fabricated extensions to the front fenders to accommodate quad headlamps and tailfins to the rear fenders to accommodate the 56 Clipper taillights. Looks like they modified the 55-56 front bumper tooling. I believe the only unique piece of sheet metal is the hood. Other fiberglass extensions and bright grille work were produced to provide the unique front end. This is NOT to say that the 58 Packards were bad cars. They were probably the most luxurious Studebaker product to roll off the South Bend line. The Hardtop is the best looking of the four models, IMHO. However, the 58s just weren't what previous Packard owners were looking for - as evidenced by sales numbers.
