Oakes locks, 1931 826.

Quite a regular

I bought this car without the key for one of the Oakes locks on the wire wheel spare. Any way to get it off without screwing it up? Widow sent me a handful of keys but none close.This one has the name cast into the front of the lock. Locksmith?

A picture would be nice, as I have no idea the type of lock. Most likely something that can be opened with some jigglers, like all locks on these cars. Or take to a locksmith, they should be able to pick it in no time, and hopefully not much $$ if you can drive it right to them.

Aren't the Oakes locks usually keyed the same as the passenger side door lock? That's how they are on my '34.

Yeah looks like a 5 wafer lock. Should be easily openable without damage, and maybe even rekeyable, by any locksmith.

Have you looked on the backside of the patent plate (vehicle number plate)? In that era key numbers were usually stamped there in purple ink.

Nice looking Locks and chrome I need a set of locks for my 640. Are your locks compatible?

I am not sure about 640 fitment, but see photo of bolt/nut pattern from my 32, the nut is 5/8 -18. I would think they could be modified to any center mounting scheme. The nuts are welded on and could be changed out to meet your needs. Oakes locks were used on many cars of the era not just Packards.

Those Oakes locks work for Packards from at least 1928 to 1930. I'm not sure about the covers themselves, tho. They may be the same. Of course, it will depend on whether or not you have wire wheels, or disc/wood wheels. The locks are the same for all covers.

I don't think so. The keys are not Briggs & Stratton, like the ignition key.
