I basically learned to drive on my father’s lap in our 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 2-dr hardtop (that was one of my cars in high school until it threw a rod on the way home with some new Packard parts) and he showed me how to keep the little standup Ford emblem on the hood aligned with the line of the road which worked! Of course, with the different length hood of a Packard, it may not be close enough.

They were an authorized 37 accessory. Of course unless you have a large dog or constantly stand nearby, on a car today they would probably last about as long as it takes the first juvenile delinquent in training to walk by and snap them off.

An outside rear view mirror on the right side might help with lane orientation.

I first learned how to drive on an old farm truck, and my dad and grandpa also taught me to sight over the hood ornament or ridge in the center of the hood to see where the right side of the car would end up.
As you get more miles on it, you'll get a feel for where that right fender is. I have a tight squeeze into my garage, so I usually have someone spot, but I've found I know the right angle - the spotter is just insurance.

When I first got my Packard, driving on some narrow paved country roads around my house (with center reflectors widely spaced on top of that), I learned to take advantage as well of the hood ornament as an edge of road guide since shoulder = ditch. I had wondered if others picked up on that.

Took the 53 to the Thresherman's Reunion, a huge steam and tractor show in Lancaster County PA. Huge and smoky fun. Clippy was a big hit and drew many questions. Took a lesson for us Packard folks from one of the exhibitors there who had taught his 16 year old son how to handle a 110 year old steam tractor. Pass on the skills whenever you can.
On the way home I had to take the River Road as I do so like fording streams in old iron.

Neighbor suggested that the shop would look more festive if I put some pumpkins by the door for Halloween, but somehow I'm not feeling it.
Second up, if you find a bad bearing cone always replace the bearing also as the usually unseen inner race is sure to have damage too. Lastly, what is wrong with this picture? Attach file: IMG_0667.JPG (216.25 KB) IMG_0670.JPG (136.29 KB) IMG_0671.JPG (129.43 KB) IMG_0672.JPG (210.49 KB)
