1956 Packard Patrician - $2,500 USD

It's a bummer, but I have gotten to the point where I can't afford to keep up with the repairs and maintenance for this Patrician. Today, the starter pushed through the dash while starting the car(photo attached); it drove fine after, but when I went to reverse it with the push button transmission, neither the park nor reverse would engage. I turned off the engine and parked it. It now won't start because the car won't click into the parking brake.

Long story short. I'm selling this car.

This car is one from this listing on BAT a few years ago.
bringatrailer.com/listing/1956-packard-patrician-3/

Since acquiring:
- Oil and transmission fluid changes
- Replaced Battery
- alternator conversion
- Fixed brake and turn signals
- New white wall tires & curb feelers
- Installed 4 Focal speakers, a 1000W Amp, and a media console in the glove box with Bluetooth & a reverse camera.
-Installed lap belts

THIS CAR DOES NOT RUN NOW.

For transparency, here is the work that I believe should be done if I had endless amounts of money or more technical chops to repair myself:

- Rebuild Engine
- Rebuild Transmission (whoever wired the transmission before I purchased it made it so you could drive in neutral, and now whatever is causing the brake)
- Rewire the car. (Power slowly drains even with the new alternator and battery.)
- Fix headliner (same as it was in the BAT)
- Reseal the windows (I never had the car in the rain, but the seals to the front window slightly leak at the car wash).
- Rear locks can lock, but it's a very wonky workaround.

Or just use this as a parts car.

I loved this car. My son loved this car. I just can't, in good faith, keep putting money into it. I hope someone in this community can capitalize on my gains.

Looks like it has factory A/C! Is it complete and does it work? Since I am also in Santa Cruz (although my shop is in Oregon), maybe it's something I should consider! It is Tangier Red and Dover White or one of the other similar combinations?

Oops! I see that the Bring a Trailer listing answers my questions. Scottish Heather (is that the original color?) and no factory A/C although there is a speaker knob where its switch should be. Seeing it now, I recall when this came up on Bring a Trailer but it was too far away from me at the time.

Yeah I’m not sure why the original owner drilled that hole in the dash for it. I never ran the heater. Since there is no dynamat, the car warms up quickly when driving.

I would love to buy your Patrician but must refrain due to the distance. Opposite coast. I had the same issue with not being able to shift into park, neutral, and reverse. The issue was bad wiring to the transmission pressure switch. I have plans on rewiring the whole car, but for now, I spliced the orange wires together at the firewall to bypass the switch. Now I can shift the left buttons. I am curious about your radio in the glove box and was hoping for a picture.

Sorry to hear about the trials and tribulations you've suffered with your Packard.

But, when your '56 Patrician Touring Sedan is sold, could you please advise so the Registry entry can be updated?

I remember the post when I saw you bought this car. It's disappointing that you're having so many problems with it.

Unfortunately it seems that some of the common pain points on these are hitting you pretty hard. Even given the issues this car has, it's in nice shape overall. As I recall this car was very nice aesthetically which is the most expensive part of a car. I think you will easily be able to sell this to another Packard enthusiast.

Here is a photo from the install before I replaced the knobs on the dash.

The rearview cam clicked right on when you put the car in reverse. It was professionally installed. The sound upgrade and reverse camera cost roughly what I’m selling the car for but that’s ok. It made driving the car really fun for me and my family while we had it.

PS I really appreciate everyone’s nice words.

It needs some TLC, and it certainly appears to be worth it.
