Since you said you installed the gear linkage, can we assume that you are using the gear shift lever on the steering column to make the shift you are having the problem with?

Have you tried shifting using the control manual valve lever directly on the transmission with the linkage removed? Are all gears available at the transmission?

There are numerous potential issues between those points, from the lever on the transmission on backwards to the detents for the gear shift lever, they need to be checked at each step from the transmission to the steering column.

G'day HotRodKid56,
to PackardInfo, and from Finlad. Can't be many Packards there.

I invite you to include your '56 Clipper in PackardInfo's Packard Vehicle Registry.

Good luck with sorting out the linkage/gear change.

Since P and N

Are at opposite sides.

Lever on manual shaft is probably loose.

Or. Your not in neutral..

Any case drop the pan.

The manual valve will go back an forth without oil. Lubrication is always better

It should go. Click . Click. Click. Click all positions. The Click is the gear. H.D.l.r.n.

When you are in P. Turn the flange. And you'll hear a big snap/click the pawl locking into parking gear

With the linkage disconnected, can you move the selector lever very far?

Also the gear order is PNHDLR.

As long as the linkage is disconnected, make sure the shift lever on the steering column can cover the full range.

If you have little motion at the transmission, it is time to take the pan off.
You may have moved the manual valve too far and gotten it out of the detents.
There is a stop on the inside lever that connects to the manual valve that may be off, loose, or failed that allowed it to pull the valve too far.

Your stop may be rotated out of position. See this thread. This photo shows correct orientation.

packardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?start=0&topic_id=11734

If the stop is missing then your problem is probably what 56Clippers said above.

Send a photo after the pan is off.

You'll need to turn that stop 90 degrees clockwise and adjust it so the reverse position does not overtravel and pull the valve out of the detents. While you are there I strongly recommend drilling and pinning that shift lever with a roll pin as they just love to work loose on the shaft.
